A kitchen
that begins
with the stone itself.
that begins
with the stone itself.
Mr and Mrs C arrived knowing exactly what they wanted. Not a kitchen that happened to have stone on it, but one built around a specific material — a material they had chosen, held up to the light, and decided was theirs. That material was Calacatta Viola.
The result is a classic British kitchen of real distinction, complemented by a sitting room media wall in bookmatched Atlas Plan Desert Soul porcelain. Two spaces, two very different moods — connected by the same commitment to doing things properly.
Slab Selection — In Person at Our Supplier
One of the defining abilities of What Worktop is the opportunity for customers to visit our slab supplier and hand-pick their own stone. Mr and Mrs C took full advantage of this, visiting the yard, walking the bundles, and choosing their Calacatta Viola slabs in person.
No two slabs are the same, and standing in front of the full-scale material is the only way to truly understand what you are choosing. The confidence that comes from that decision carries all the way through to the finished installation.

Kitchen & Larder
Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble from Tuscany with a character that demands to be seen at scale. The ground is bright white and ivory — not the soft cream of many Calacattas — and the veining runs in bold, irregular formations of deep violet, burgundy and near-black that give the slab an almost painterly quality.
The stone runs throughout: main worktop runs either side of the AGA, the central island, a full-height splashback behind the range, and the framing of the larder cupboard — a detail that gives the room a furniture-like quality you simply cannot achieve with any other material. The edge is a clean fine eased profile, appropriate to the 20mm thickness and keeping the look precise rather than heavy.

Media Wall — Bookmatched
The sitting room took a different direction entirely. Mr and Mrs C wanted a media wall that was a genuine architectural feature — not a painted flat or a timber panel, but something with real material presence. Atlas Plan Desert Soul delivered exactly that.
Desert Soul is a large-format sintered porcelain from Atlas Concorde’s premium Atlas Plan collection, with a warm cream and off-white ground broken by dramatic sweeps of dark charcoal and ink-black in cloud-like formations. The installation is bookmatched — consecutive panels mirrored about a central vertical seam — creating a striking symmetrical composition. The TV is recessed flush into the stone, flanked by panels that frame rather than compete.
Porcelain at this specification requires no sealing and is impervious to heat, scratch and UV — built to last as long as the kitchen beside it.
